The Community Funds Program of Minnesota Community Foundation has designed a way for a community fund to serve as an “umbrella” for a group of related funds benefiting a community. We identify this as a Family of Funds.
A Family of Funds is usually arranged under the community’s main fund--the general unrestricted endowment fund. As the Family of Funds develops, it may include additional funds created by the community, but it is usually built by the affiliation of new funds created by other organizations or individuals in the community. The minimum size for creating a new fund is $10,000.
Examples include:
- An endowment fund created by a nonprofit organization
- A named family fund created by an individual or family wishing to memorialize a family name
- A Donor Advised Fund created by a donor that allows the donor to make grantmaking recommendations during his or her lifetime
- A Designated Fund created by a donor to benefit a particular nonprofit organization or organizations in the community
- A scholarship fund created by a donor
- A Field of Interest fund created by a donor to support a particular area such as arts or human services
